VITICULTURE
THE WORK OF THE WINEGROWER
"The soul of the wine grows on the vine..."
The attention given to the vine is a priority at Lynch-Bages, as exemplified by the size of the team dedicated to it. Some 35 people are involved in the daily care of the vineyard.
Out of a concern for sustainable development, the all aspects of the agriculture is thought through: methods of fertilisation defined precisely and adapted to the soils, optimised phytosanitary control, use of mating disruption against grape cluster worms, vineyard-floor management strategies, such as weed control and cover-cropping to control the strength of the vine, prolonged rest for the soil by flowered fallowing etc. Everything is done to protect the specific character of the terroir over time.
The use of environmentally friendly products is given priority across the board. An efficient treatment of viticultural and vinicultural by-products is provided by the use of two purification plants installed on the property.
In pursuit of continuous improvement, the estate's technical service invents and develops customised mechanical tools, such as innovative tractors with the cab installed behind, which ensure perfect vision for the driver allowing him to work the vineyard with a high degree of precision.
Since 2006, the attention paid to the agricultural heritage of Lynch-Bages has become even greater. A large massale selection initiative of plants unique to the property has been undertaken. It helps to preserve the genetic heritage of the vine cultivation over time, thus sustainably ensuring the specificity of Lynch-Bages vineyard. A reasonable turnover of the plots by grafting is also underway, a technique that involves using the roots of existing feet and thus to refine the planting and improve the matching between varietals and soil types.
